  6. IRIX 5.3 is an upwardly compatible version of IRIX 5.2 which incorporates
  7. bug fixes and performance enhancements. IRIX 5.3 is supported on all
  8. platforms that run IRIX 5.2 plus Indy R4600, Indigo2 R4600SC, Corona, and
  9. OnyxLE (R8000 based systems are not supported by any IRIX 5.* release). The
  10. purpose of this release is to provide new features and enhanced performance
  11. relative to previous versions of IRIX 5.

  26.      Asynchronous I/O and direct I/O are two new features available with the
  27.      5.X release of IRIX. They provide finer control of I/O operations than
  28.      those provided by standard UNIX(TM) I/O mechanisms, and will have many
  29.      applications in real-time processing, fast data transfer, and on-line
  30.      transaction processing (OLTP).
